Spiced Apple Pear Compote
Spiced Apple Pear Compote
My parents recently brought me a bag of apples from a day at the orchard and I have been making a variety of yummy treats including this apple pear compote. Compote is the French word for fruit sauce and in my opinion, sounds more elegant and appealing. The aromas that fill the house while this is cooking are so warm and cozy. I love having this compote warm for dessert in the evening. It’s basically like eating pie filling. Compote is also a great topper for oatmeal, chia pudding, yogurt, waffles, and pancakes.
Ingredients for Spiced Apple Pear Compote
4 pears
4 apples (such as Honey Crisp, Braeburn, Gala, Pink Lady)
juice of a lemon, about 2 tablespoons
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon cardamom
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
Peel the apples and pears, then quarter them to remove the seeds. Cut the apples in pears into 1-inch pieces.
Add one cup of water to a large pan. Add the apples, pears, and remaining ingredients. Cook on medium high heat for 30-35 minutes until the fruit begins to soften. Stir often to avoid sticking. Add another ½ cup of water if any sticking occurs.
Use a potato masher to break up the fruit pieces to your desired consistency.
Serves 6-8
