The Perfect Grilled Cheese
The secret to a good grilled cheese all depends on the cheese in the middle. I once found a cheese that was a combination Gruyere and cheddar and loved how the flavors melded together. Finding that specific cheese is not always easy, so I decided to make my grilled cheese by using both Gruyere and cheddar. The flavor combination is delicious and pairs perfectly with a bowl of tomato soup.
The Perfect Grilled Cheese
Ingredients for Grilled Cheese
4 teaspoons butter
4 pieces sandwich bread
6 oz block Gruyere cheese, sliced in ¼ inch slices
8 oz block medium cheddar cheese, sliced in ¼ inch slices
Directions for Grilled Cheese
Grease and preheat a non-stick pan over medium heat.
Spread a teaspoon of butter on each piece of bread. Place the buttered sides of two pieces facing down in the pan.
Add a layer of Gruyere on each piece of bread so it is fully covered. Repeat with a layer of cheddar on top of the Gruyere. The amount of cheese needed will vary depending on bread size, I used 4 pieces of each type on mine.
Add the remaining bread slices on top with the buttered side up. Cook the sandwiches 3-4 minutes on each side, watching carefully. Sometimes I lower the heat if they are browning quickly. The cheese should be slightly oozing out the side and the bread should be lightly golden.
