Grandma Marie’s Apple Crisp
This is my grandma’s apple crisp recipe. It is simple, delicious, and nostalgic of my childhood. When I studied abroad in Cambridge, England, I cooked dinner for my 20 classmates and had a lineup of this apple crisp in the kitchen for dessert.
I am not sure I have ever peeled so many apples, but it was a comforting dessert for all of us away from home. I like to serve warm with vanilla ice cream for the perfect autumnal dessert.
Grandma Marie’s Apple Crisp
Ingredients
6 medium apples peeled, cored, and chopped (1 inch pieces)
½ cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
pinch of nutmeg
1 cup flour
½ cup cold unsalted butter
½ cup brown sugar
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place apples in a buttered pie dish. In a small bowl, mix the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg with ½ cup of water. Pour the mixture evenly over the apples. In a medium bowl add the flour, butter, and brown sugar. Using a pastry blender, mix until butter is broken up into small pieces and the mixture is crumbly. Add the mixture on top of the apples and press down to form a crust. Bake for one hour until browned and bubbly.
Serves 6-8
*Use good quality apples for this recipe, not red delicious! Some of my favorites are Honey Crisp, Gala, Pink Lady, Braeburn, Fuji, and McIntosh.
If you don’t have a pastry blender, you can blitz the flour mixture in a food processor. The butter should be in pea size pieces.
