Coastal Grandma Tablescape

Long before the recent “Coastal Grandma” trend went viral, I was living this life since 2003. The aesthetic in Something’s Gotta Give caught my attention from the first viewing, which has now reached more than 100 viewings. The soundtrack has been on repeat for the last 19 years and is currently on now as I type this. I remember listening to it in my freshman dorm room while studying and it gave me so much comfort. Clearly it still does. I have wondered what it is about this movie that grabbed me so much and have come to the conclusion of; the calming color palette, pops of French music, an inviting dinner table full of conversation and laughter, comfy couches, cozy candles lit during a thunderstorm with a pan of scrambled eggs and glass of red wine, my forever dream kitchen, the idyllic farm stand, the gourmet grocery store reminiscent of Barefoot Contessa, long walks on the beach, and the character I aspire to be, Erica Barry.  To me, this movie is perfect.

While most of us don’t live in a house like Erica’s, we can find ways to incorporate this aesthetic into our homes. I am sharing my Hampton’s style tablescape that you can incorporate into your home no matter the size of your table. 

I have pulled together a few items that I recommend. Start with round rattan placemats. I got mine at Target years ago and they have held up well. For the napkins I chose a light blue to continue the coastal vibe, but you can use a neutral color too.  I like the look of linen napkins because they add a bit of a rustic feel. For displaying the napkins, completely unfold and pinch in the middle and lift up. Then tie some jute twine around the middle. Place the napkins in the middle of your plates. White or neutral plates are preferred. Then add your silverware on the sides of the plate.

For the glassware, I like La Rochere Perigord wine and water glasses. They are made in France, great quality, and add elegance to the table. I put these at the top of the placemat due to the small size of my dining table but if you have a larger table, you can also get rattan coasters and place on those.

For the center of the table, I found some vintage glass candle holders in different sizes. My table just fits two but if you have a bigger table then go with four. I use creamy taper candles which bring some warmth. If you want to add some flowers, I recommend a vase of hydrangeas between the candles. This is an easy and timeless tablescape that gives off a classy and comfortable aesthetic. Add some spaghetti vongole, caprese salad, and chilled white wine and you have yourself a delightful dinner to share with your favorite people.
